is a non-profit organization that was founded by my family in 2004. My wife, Lucy and I immigrated to the United States in 1974, and we have lived in Cerritos for over 30 years.
Our three children, Andy, Tony, and Jia, were educated in the ABC Unified School District schools, graduated from local universities, and all are practicing attorneys. The community has given so much to us, and we are truly grateful.
We wish to help others in the community as we have been helped in the past. We established our foundation to give more educational opportunities to eligible students and to help improve their futures. Presently, our Foundation grants scholarships to high school and college students.
In 2006 and 2007, the Lucy and Joseph Cho Foundation awarded 36 students with scholarships. It was a wonderful beginning for our foundation and we were truly encouraged by the community support.
This year, we will award scholarships to 10 high school students ($500.00) and 5 college students ($1,000.00). Applications for the scholarships will be due on June 30, 2008. We would like to ask you to encourage students who you know well to apply for the scholarship.

Successful candidates are selected on the basis of academic achievement, personal strengths, leadership, and financial need. ARTISTS AND SCHOLARS FUND
This is the Steve S. Kang Young Artists and Scholars Fund application. Use this form to apply for scholarships/grants in support of the 2008-2009 academic year. Applications are invited from all undergraduates and graduate students who expect to attend an accredited institution of higher education during the grant year or recent graduates who are doing research or pursuing other scholarly or artistic projects. Awards are given to applicants who can give evidence of: (1) good academic or artistic achievement and promise; (2) financial need; and (3) sound character and commitments to science and/or the arts. Your application for a scholarship or grant will receive full and fair consideration only if you adhere closely to the following rules – we cannot guarantee that any application not doing so will receive such consideration from the committee.
1. Applications must be submitted to the address below and postmarked no later than October 31, 2008. (Note: do not waste money on Federal Express, etc. First class postmarking by October 31st is sufficient.)
2. All applications and essays must be typed or printed from a computer. All applications must be completely filled out. Any incomplete applications will be disqualified.
3. Please submit one original plus five (5) copies of the application. Each copy must be a complete, collated set of the entire application with all accompanying documents; beginning with page two of this form (do not return this page as part of your submission).
4. Under the heading “Best mailing address after June” (page 2) please list the best place for us to reach you by mail or e-mail during the summer. This is extremely important for the notification process.
5. If you require additional space to complete answers to any of your questions, please use an additional sheet of paper, identifying the section.
6. No applications will be returned to the applicant. If you submit an essay as part of a competition, the Steve S. Kang Young Artists and Scholars Fund has the right to publish or reprint any winning essays.
You will be notified on the status of your application by December 30, 2008. Award nominees may be asked to arrange for a transcript waiver to be sent to the Fund.

The following items must accompany your application for this scholarship and are incorporated into it as an integral part of your request for a grant/scholarship (all of these items should be submitted on 8-1/2” x 11” paper):
1. An essay, typed and double-spaced, which explains your motivation to seek the degree or complete the project for which you are requesting assistance. Your essay should also elaborate on the personal attributes to which you feel qualify you for this degree or to complete the project, your need for financial aid and your efforts to assist yourself.
2. Two letters of recommendation from someone other than a relative commenting on your character and standing in the community. The letters of recommendation should be completed on letterhead, signed and mailed directly to us from the author. We will disqualify letters that are sent to us from the applicant. Letters from professors who have had students in their classes are desirable.
3. A copy of your most recent college/graduate official school transcript. New graduate students should submit copies of final undergraduate transcriptions.
4. A written confirmation from the college/graduate scholar which you will be attending stating that you are in good standing and eligible to be enrolled for work toward the degree you are pursuing.
5. Curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages)
